What to Expect From Your First Physiotherapy Appointment
Starting physiotherapy for the first time can feel a little daunting, especially if you’re unsure what will happen during the appointment. Many people worry they’ll be asked to do painful exercises or that they’ll need a scan before treatment can begin. The reality is much simpler.
Our goal is to understand what’s causing your symptoms, help you make sense of your pain, and create a personalised plan to get you back to doing the things you enjoy.
Before Your Appointment
You don’t need to do any special preparation before your appointment, but it can be helpful to think about:
- When your symptoms started.
- Whether there was a specific injury or if they came on gradually.
- What activities make your symptoms better or worse.
- Any previous injuries or treatments you’ve had.
- Any medications you’re currently taking.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Depending on the area being assessed, you may be asked to expose part of the body, but your comfort and privacy are always respected.
Step 1: Getting to Know You
Your appointment will begin with a conversation.
Your physiotherapist will ask questions about your symptoms, lifestyle, work, hobbies, exercise habits, and your goals. This is often the most important part of the assessment, as it helps build a clear picture of what’s happening.
You may be asked questions such as:
- Where is your pain?
- How would you describe it?
- When did it begin?
- What makes it better or worse?
- Has it changed over time?
- What would you like to be able to do again?
These questions help us understand not only your injury, but how it affects your daily life.
Step 2: Physical Assessment
Next, we’ll carry out a physical examination.
Depending on your symptoms, this may include:
- Looking at your posture and movement.
- Assessing your joint mobility.
- Testing muscle strength.
- Measuring your flexibility.
- Checking your balance or walking pattern.
- Performing specific clinical tests to help identify the source of your symptoms.
Don’t worry if something reproduces your pain, this information often helps us narrow down the diagnosis. We always work within your comfort levels and explain what we’re doing throughout the assessment.
Step 3: Understanding Your Diagnosis
One of the most valuable parts of your appointment is understanding what’s going on.
Once we’ve completed the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain:
- What they believe is causing your symptoms.
- Why it has happened.
- What structures are involved.
- What your recovery is likely to look like.
- Whether any further investigations or referrals are recommended.
We believe that understanding your condition is the first step towards recovering from it.
Step 4: Starting Treatment
In most cases, treatment begins during your first appointment.
Your treatment may include:
- Hands on manual therapy.
- Joint mobilisation.
- Soft tissue massage.
- Exercise prescription.
- Strengthening or mobility exercises.
- Advice on activity modification.
- Education about pain and recovery.
Every treatment plan is tailored to your individual goals; whether that’s returning to running, getting back to the gym, playing with your children, or simply being able to move comfortably again.
Will I Need Scans?
Not necessarily.
Many musculoskeletal conditions can be accurately diagnosed through a thorough history and physical examination alone.
If your physiotherapist feels that an X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, or referral to another healthcare professional would be beneficial, they’ll explain why and guide you through the next steps.
How Many Appointments Will I Need?
This varies depending on your condition.
Some people recover after just a couple of appointments with the right advice and exercises, while others (particularly following surgery or long-standing injuries) may benefit from ongoing rehabilitation over several weeks/months.
Your physiotherapist will discuss an appropriate treatment plan and review your progress regularly.
What Should I Bring?
For your first appointment, it’s helpful to bring:
- Any relevant scan or imaging reports.
- A list of current medications if applicable.
- Comfortable clothing suitable for movement.
- Any questions you’d like to ask.
